Life at Rocky Mountaineer
We caught up with some of our team members to get their perspective on working here. Read on to get an insider look at the amazing experiences you can look forward to, as well as some helpful tips and advice for anyone looking to join our dynamic team.
Our Onboard Team: What’s it like to work onboard the train?
Soak in the views and create world-class experiences onboard our luxury train. This team delivers the onboard guest experience and creates life-changing memories for our guests.
Our onboard Hosts provide passionate and engaging storytelling to our guests, including pointing out wildlife along the journey, highlighting landmarks along our routes, and calling out areas of interest and historical facts. Our Train Managers, Guest Services Managers, and the onboard support team play a key role in delivering exceptional experiences for our guests, all while travelling between some of the most beautiful destinations North America has to offer.
Meet the Onboard Team
What do you enjoy most about being an onboard Host?
Adriane, onboard Host: The people! Guests and teammates alike. The guests are excited to be there and seeing them glow the first time they see places like the Fraser Canyon and the Rocky Mountains is magical.
It’s also fun and rewarding to find little ways to wow and connect with them. This could be remembering they like a certain side with their breakfast on the second day without them asking or taking the time to personally point out your favourite views to them when you notice they are an avid photographer. These little things are so impactful. You don’t always have an opportunity to bring joy to people on the daily and that, to me, is really special.
Jacques, onboard Host: Our guests onboard the train always ask us the same question: What is your favourite part of your job? Every time we are asked that question, we take a moment to look through those large glass-dome windows, and as the scenery passes as by, the smile and sparkle in our eyes is enough to perfectly answer that question.
We are lucky to live in such a beautiful country, and even luckier to be onboard the train and explore that beautiful landscape, seeing the diverse ecosystems change throughout the day, and have the privilege to consider this our office space.
Can you describe a typical day as an onboard Host?
Adriane, onboard Host: First off, there are no typical days! Every day is different, which is one of the reasons I love my job and keep coming back. Generally, we start our day about an hour before guests start arriving early in the morning. We prepare the train and have breakfast before we welcome guests onboard, leaving approximately one and a half hours after crew call (the time we have to be at work).
We have teams we work with in a coach- usually up to four Hosts and three culinary members. While working in the GoldLeaf Service dining room downstairs in a coach, we serve two seatings of breakfast and lunch. If you are working upstairs, you will serve light snacks, beverages and provide commentary on where we travel.
James, Guest Services Manager: No two days are the same working onboard Rocky Mountaineer, and that’s one of the best things about the job. I support our onboard team as they deliver world-class service and experience across both our SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf services.
I get to be a problem-solver, a coach and trainer, a public speaker and a storyteller, and I lead one of the most passionate, enthusiastic and engaged teams you could find anywhere in the world. I interact with and engage with guests from across the globe, serve drinks and clear tables, assist with travel plans and bookings, celebrate milestone and special occasions, and get to recommend things for our guests to see and experience across Western Canada.
What skills or qualities do you think are essential for someone in your role?
Jacques: My role as a lead onboard Host requires an individual to be passionate about service excellence. As a lead, you’ll need to be aware of all the building blocks that fall in place throughout the day that provide the guests with memorable and exceptional experiences. From the moment they walk towards the red carpet in front of a coach for the first time, to the moment they shake your hand as they say goodbye at their final destination, your role as an onboard Host is to guarantee that each guest has had a trip of a lifetime.
James, Guest Services Manager: To be successful as a Guest Services Manager you need to be able to think quickly on your feet, be creative and think outside the box, communicate effectively, professionally, and often with very little notice, and be calm when faced with challenging situations.
One of the highlights of the job is traveling through some of the most unspoiled, inaccessible areas within British Columbia and Alberta. But, when you’re in a remote area with no cell service or internet and are limited to only the supplies on the train, sometimes you need to get creative to solve problems and find solutions.
Our Culinary Team: Creating regionally-inspired meals on a moving train
Our passionate Culinary team creates delicious meals onboard the train inspired by the regions we pass through. In Canada, GoldLeaf Service features our bi-level, glass-dome train where our guests dine on multi-course meals in the lower-level dining room.
These dishes are created onboard in our moving galley kitchen by a team of talented cooks, chefs, and stewards. They cook and plate beautiful regionally-inspired dishes featuring local ingredients like Okanagan stone fruit, Lois Lake steelhead, and AAA grade Alberta striploin. Our culinary program is led by Executive Chef Kaelhub Cudmore, with our menu changing every season to reflect the best in-season ingredients and new products from partners like Vancouver’s Bon Macaron Patisserie.
Meet the Culinary Team
How do you create the menu each season? What inspires the dishes we serve?
Kaelhub, Executive Chef: It’s all about the local communities we’re going through and supporting them – and not just using the local product and ingredients, but tying into the storytelling behind it and into the community behind those items.
It’s easy to go to a farm and buy their eggs, but to me, it’s more about the best way to support that farm and what their best product is. The menu starts with finding those incredible products in the community, then building the dishes around those.
What’s something that people might not know about working on a moving train?
Kaelhub: I think that people wouldn’t expect how fully stocked our kitchens are. Every single kitchen has fully functioning burners, flat-tops, Combi ovens, Alto-Shaams to hold food. Everything you would expect from a normal kitchen is in every single GoldLeaf Service coach.
Our Destinations Teams: Sharing the magic of your city
Our Destinations teams share the magic of their city with guests from around the world. They champion our guest experience by representing Rocky Mountaineer at our stations in stunning destinations in Western Canada, the Canadian Rockies and the American Southwest.
These teams are the eyes and ears of Rocky Mountaineer on the ground – helping coordinate arrivals and departures, resolving guest requests and issues, and supporting the daily operations of the train station or Guest Centres.
Meet the Team
What do you enjoy most about being a Guest Experience Manager?
Fernanda, Guest Experience Manager: While working as a Station Manager (now known as Guest Experience Manager), I had the pleasure of working with a fantastic team and had the privilege to develop them. The duties of hiring and offering a great onboarding experience always added an extra smile to the job.
Between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, I worked with the People & Culture department at Vancouver's head office, and this year, I have successfully transitioned into a talent acquisition role.
How do you handle challenges or difficult situations on the Destinations team?
Fernanda: Challenges become easier when you are a part of a great team. Working together is always an excellent solution as we come up with more creative solutions, in addition to improving our internal communication. When difficult situations arise, I also focus on maintaining a calm and composed mindset.
I believe that empathy plays a crucial role in understanding different perspectives, especially when working with diverse teams/guests. I take the time to listen to everyone’s concerns and viewpoints, which helps me respond in a thoughtful and supportive manner.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying for a seasonal position?
Fernanda, Guest Experience Manager: I’d say you can’t go wrong! Be it full-time, be it part-time, if you like adventures, challenges and want the experience of a lifetime you need to put your foot in the door. There are plenty of opportunities with Rocky Mountaineer.
Rose, Train Manager: Be ready to embrace the experience fully! The seasonal positions can be intense but incredibly rewarding. Show enthusiasm, be proactive, and don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek help when needed.
Every day offers a new adventure and opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals who share a passion for creating memorable experiences for our guests and team. It doesn’t hurt that we get to see some spectacular sights along the way.
